AI is needed because of the intense amounts of data that need to be processed. This calorimeter is key to the success of the planned Electron-Ion Collider at Brookhaven, which will collide electrons with protons and nuclei to produce snapshots of those particles\u2019 internal structure. The Electron-Proton\/Ion Collider (ePIC) Collaboration will conduct the first experiment at the Electron-Ion Collider. It will involve building a particle detector (the Barrel Calorimeter) \u00a0for analyzing collisions between electrons and protons or other nuclei. The data will give us insight into the smallest internal building blocks of visible matter, quarks and gluons, and help to understand the underlying laws that govern the strongest force in nature.
